Fully Remote Position! 3 Month Contract Pay Rate - $57.50/hr Day Shift: Monday-Friday Job Description We are seeking an experienced Coding Manager to provide operational leadership and oversight for an Acute Inpatient Coding department. This role is responsible for leading coding supervisors and coding staff, ensuring accurate and compliant coding practices, driving operational excellence, and supporting revenue cycle initiatives. The Coding Manager serves as a subject matter expert in inpatient coding, regulatory compliance, quality improvement, and coding technologies while fostering a collaborative, high-performing team environment. The ideal candidate has strong leadership experience, extensive acute inpatient coding expertise, and the ability to independently analyze complex coding issues while maintaining compliance with industry regulations and organizational standards. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Management Provide leadership and oversight to Coding Supervisors and coding staff. Manage employee performance through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and professional development. Conduct performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, interviews, hiring, and workforce planning. Foster a positive, engaging, and collaborative work environment that promotes employee satisfaction and retention. Make day-to-day operational decisions regarding coding staff assignments and workflow. Coding Quality & Compliance Oversee coding audit and education programs to ensure accurate, compliant coding and billing practices. Monitor coding quality and productivity standards and hold staff accountable for performance expectations. Ensure compliance with organizational coding policies, official coding guidelines, and regulatory requirements. Investigate coding compliance concerns and implement corrective actions as needed. Assist in developing and implementing enterprise-wide coding compliance initiatives. Revenue Cycle & Coding Operations Support coding operations that positively impact revenue cycle performance. Ensure standardized coding policies and procedures are consistently applied across acute and ambulatory settings. Assist the Coding Manager with coding inquiries, audits, payer denials, and third-party agency requests. Educate staff on the role coding plays in supporting physicians, clinical operations, quality reporting, reimbursement, and revenue integrity. Subject Matter Expertise Serve as the organization's coding subject matter expert for: ICD-10-CM/PCS diagnosis and procedure coding Medical terminology Anatomy and physiology Coding guidelines Reimbursement methodologies Payer-specific coding requirements Revenue cycle compliance Public reporting and quality outcome measures Act as a coding nosologist by interpreting disease classifications, procedure terminology, and healthcare data for accurate coding translation. Apply sound judgment and analytical thinking to complex coding situations. Process Improvement Identify workflow improvement opportunities and implement best practices to improve efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. Perform root cause analysis on coding issues and develop effective corrective action plans. Participate in organizational coding projects, department builds, workflow redesign, and regional initiatives. Serve as the liaison between coding operations and internal departments. Coding Technology Maintain expert knowledge of coding software applications and EMR systems. Assist with workflow optimization and system enhancements to maximize coding efficiency and standardization. Financial & Administrative Responsibilities Assist the Director with departmental budget development and management. Monitor expenditures and ensure departmental operations remain within budget. Support departmental policy development and implementation. Professional Ethics Adhere to the AHIMA and AAPC Standards of Ethical Coding. Maintain coding credentials through continuing education and professional development. Remain current on coding regulations, reimbursement changes, and industry best practices. Required Qualifications RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) certification required. Minimum 4 years of Coding Management experience. Minimum 3 years of Acute Inpatient Coding experience. Demonstrated leadership experience managing coding teams. Strong knowledge of: ICD-10-CM/PCS Acute Inpatient Coding Revenue Cycle Coding Compliance Coding Audits Regulatory Requirements Reimbursement Methodologies Medical Terminology Anatomy & Physiology Preferred Qualifications Previous Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) oversight experience. Experience with: Epic EMR Solventum Computer-Assisted Coding (CAC) PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Smart 2.0 software Experience leading enterprise-wide coding initiatives. Background in coding process improvement and workflow optimization.
