Job Title: Telecom Engineer Location: NYC / Hybrid Position Overview We are seeking a Telecom Engineer to serve as the dedicated technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) and project owner for a large-scale, utility-grade fiber deployment connecting over 100 substations. In this role, you will own the technical approach from requirements gathering and fiber/network architecture through RFP/specification development, vendor coordination, field implementation, and system migration. You will ensure a consistent, scalable fiber architecture across our substation network. Key Responsibilities Architecture & Design: Lead fiber/network design and architecture, including cable routing, physical arrangements, and infrastructure requirements. Project Ownership: Develop technical specifications, engineering packages, and RFP documentation. Vendor & Stakeholder Management: Coordinate vendors, contractors, and internal teams (engineering, construction, procurement, and operations) across large multi-site deployments. Deployment & Migration: Oversee substation field deployments, equipment commissioning, legacy system migrations, and network integration. Emergency Response: Serve in an assigned System Emergency Assignment, requiring availability during non-business hours (nights, weekends, holidays) during utility emergencies. Required Qualifications: Education & Experience Bachelor?s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with 8+ years of engineering work experience OR a Master?s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with 6+ years of engineering work experience. Minimum of 3 years of experience specifically in relay protection and/or control systems engineering disciplines. Minimum of 3 years of fiber/telecommunications infrastructure experience, including large-scale network design or deployment. Technical Skills & Expertise Deep knowledge of Fiber Optic Telecommunications Infrastructure and Fiber Network Design. Hands-on experience with MPLS, DWDM, T1, and related network transport technologies .Proven experience with Telecommunications System Migration & Integration within utility-grade communications infrastructure. Strong background in technical specification/RFP development and vendor management. Licenses & Physical Requirements Valid Driver's License is required for travel throughout the service territory. Ability to work in power plants and high-voltage substations. Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and work in various indoor/outdoor environments under all weather conditions. Ability to sit or stand using standard office equipment for the duration of the workday. Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)Prior experience with electric utilities, critical infrastructure, or geographically distributed infrastructure deployments. Working knowledge of IEC 61850 standards. Industry involvement with EPRI, NATF, or similar organizations focused on relay applications. Experience with telecom enclosures, field commissioning, and legacy migration strategies. | |
