Position Overview We are seeking a Laboratory Animal Research Technician to support animal care, health monitoring, and clinical research activities within a research laboratory environment. This position is responsible for providing high-quality animal husbandry and healthcare while supporting experimental protocols, clinical observations, sample collection, and other research activities. The technician will work in Biosafety Level 1 and 2 environments and must follow applicable animal welfare regulations, research protocols, company policies, and veterinary procedures. The ideal candidate is comfortable working directly with livestock and animals, has strong attention to detail, and can work effectively in a fast-paced, highly regulated research environment. Key Responsibilities Animal Care & Husbandry Provide daily animal husbandry and healthcare in accordance with approved experimental protocols and applicable regulations. Provide animals with feed, water, enrichment, and appropriate environmental care. Conduct daily animal health and welfare assessments. Recognize and promptly report signs of illness, distress, injury, or abnormal behavior to the Site Veterinarian or Group/Team Leader. Restrain and manipulate animals for routine and emergency procedures. Administer treatments under the direction of the Site Veterinarian or designated personnel. Maintain, adjust, and repair animal pens, feeders, drinking systems, and livestock-handling equipment. Perform cleaning and sanitation of animal rooms, equipment, and related areas. Maintain appropriate biosecurity practices throughout animal care and research activities. Research & Study Support Assist with scientific procedures according to approved study protocols. Conduct clinical observations and disease outcome assessments. Administer experimental treatment articles when trained and authorized. Accurately record scientific observations and study information using approved forms and documentation systems. Assist with pre- and post-mortem clinical research sample collection. Collect samples such as blood, feces, oral fluids, nasal, tonsillar, or laryngeal swabs and tissues as directed by study protocols. Assist with necropsy procedures under the direction of the Site Veterinarian or designated personnel. Under appropriate supervision and training, assist with sedation monitoring and euthanasia procedures. Documentation & Compliance Maintain accurate records related to animal care, preventive medicine, USDA requirements, and study protocols. Follow all applicable animal welfare regulations and company policies. Work in accordance with: Animal Welfare Act and Regulations NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching Company veterinary and standard operating procedures AAALAC accreditation requirements Complete all required study and animal-care documentation accurately and on time. Biosecurity & Facility Support Perform site biosecurity activities as assigned. Support water system sanitation and environmental monitoring. Assist with feed and equipment decontamination. Collect environmental audit samples. Maintain clean, organized, and compliant animal research areas. Support facility and equipment maintenance activities. Team Support Work collaboratively with veterinarians, researchers, investigators, technicians, and other site personnel. Provide guidance to junior team members when delegated by the Site Veterinarian or Group/Team Leader. Participate in site-specific committees and workgroups as assigned. Demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and a commitment to teamwork. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Ability and willingness to work directly with animals and livestock. Ability to work in a laboratory/research environment under Biosafety Level 1 and 2 conditions. Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document observations and procedures. Ability to follow detailed protocols, SOPs, and regulatory requirements. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Ability to learn new procedures and processes quickly. Ability to exercise sound judgment and recognize abnormal animal health conditions. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. Physical & Environmental Requirements Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including hot, cold, noisy, and humid environments. Ability to lift up to 70 lbs. occasionally and 50 lbs. frequently. Must be comfortable performing hands-on work with animals during both ante-mortem and post-mortem procedures. Must be able to maintain an even temperament when working with livestock. Must be able to read and see clearly; prescription eyewear is permitted. Must not have allergies that prevent working with animals, livestock, or feed dust. Rare travel outside the local area may be required. Important Candidate Considerations This position involves direct, hands-on interaction with livestock and animals, including animal restraint, health assessments, sample collection, and post-mortem procedures. Candidates must be comfortable working in this environment and following strict biosecurity and animal welfare requirements. Weekend overtime is required at least once per month, with additional weekend, holiday, or weekday hours possible based on operational needs. | |
